10 weeks of body percussion ideas - Week 3

22nd April 2019
Body percussion warmup

Forget drums and guitars, your body is an instrument! You can hum, clap and stomp music using just your body! Even if you do have other musical  instruments, these make great warmup activities for your class at the beginning the lesson. Why not even throw them into a maths or english class to energise your pupils?

Every week for 10 weeks, we’ll be posting a new body percussion activity idea that we use in our own workshops. They make great warmups and energisers in the classroom or meetings. They can also be adapted for different difficulty levels, or to fit with a given topic or theme.

Week 3 - Hot Potato

In this exercise the participants form pairs and pass the rhythm back and forward to each other like a hot potato! Start by getting them to count to 3 taking a number each like this:
Person A - “1”
Person B - “2”
Person A - “3”
Person B - “1”
Person A - “2”
Person B - “3”

Once this starts to become easy, change a number for a clap, click or stamp etc. For example:
Person A - “1”
Person B - “2”
Person A - CLAP
Person B - “1”
Person A - “2”
Person B - CLAP

Then change another number for a word. This word might be within a given theme, like say, dinosaurs. Ask them for suggestions:
Person A - “T-Rex”
Person B - “2”
Person A - CLAP
Person B - “T-Rex”
Person A - “2”
Person B - CLAP

Finally change the last number for a vocal sound. For this example we’ll go with big ROAR! Ask them for suggestions:
Person A - “T-Rex”
Person B - “ROAR”
Person A - CLAP
Person B - “T-Rex”
Person A - “ROAR”
Person B - CLAP

Variation

- Use this as a way to revise other subjects. So for example, change the number "1" to a country in Africa (if you're currently studying Africa!).

- Try this as a whole group by forming a circle and passing the number around from person to person.
