Totterdown African Drumming

Learning rhythms and songs rooted in West African Mandé culture using djembés (hand drums) and dunduns (bass drums played with sticks). We also learn songs, breaks and soloing techniques.

We welcome all ability levels from complete beginners upwards. Even if you have never drummed before, this class is suitable for you. Time is always spent learning basic technique, and breaking down the rhythms.

We spend around 4-6 weeks on each rhythm, which typically consists of 2 djembé accompaniment parts; 3 dundun parts; a break; and solo phrases, which can be used as the basis for improvisation.

The class is supported with notation and video for those wishing to practise between sessions.
